WaZoBiaSOFT

Supporting organization:
WaZoBiaSOFT Community Project
URL:

Project Description:

WaZoBiaSOFT is an open source software translation project, initiated and supported by the WaZoBia Community Project in Nigeria.

The WaZoBiaSOFT Community Project aims at making software available in the three main Nigerian languages – Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo. The main motivation for this project is to bridge the digital divide between Nigeria and the rest of the world. The projects wants to bring software to an emerging world, and therefore we at WaZoBiaSOFT believe that the native languages must undergo the so called computing localization of the Information Technology Age or face the threat of extinction as we move to the next age. WaZoBiaSOFT is tying to help in the modernization of the three core languages in Nigeria - Yoruba, Igbo and Hause. Although, English is the official language in Nigeria, however, we believe that by having local language translation in computing, will encourage and stimulate growth in computer literacy all over ther country. Other than that, it will be easier for people to become computer literate when the barrier of having to learn English is removed particularly the people whose primary form of communication is not English. Translating Linux into the above mentioned languages will greatly encourage and enhance the use of information technology among the Nigerian population.

Wazobia is derived from the words for 'come' in the three languages, wa, zo and bia

Points of interest:

The group chose to work with Open source software because it is free, very practical and probably the only way people will be able to use software legally at little or no cost. It will help bridging the digital divide and make sure that more Nigerians become computer literate.
