Can You Build a Flash Widget for Reading Relief for Darfur?

While doing some consulting for Social Actions as a "Community Interpreter," I recently tried out their Social Actions Alerts that notifies you of actions (ie. volunteer opportunities, events, petitions) that interest you via email and cell. I set up a search for actions related to Darfur and have been getting 1-3 notices/week.

I thought I'd share the opportunity I got today with y'all in case who can help. An organization called the Book Wish Foundation is looking for someone to create a widget, like Sprout, to help get the word out about their project with Darfur refugees.

Here is the listing from Idealist.org:

Flash Widget: Reading Relief for Darfur
Organization: Book Wish Foundation

Create a flash widget (e.g., Sprout) our supporters can spread around the web, highlighting our reading relief project for Darfur refugees in eastern Chad.

More opportunities added to Social Actions

The connection and process is less about giving money, and more about sharing ideas, knowledge, skills, and connections. And now you can hear about opportunities to get involved through Social Actions!

NABUUR volunteer opportunities now in Social Actions

I think I first met Peter Deitz at Web of Change, talking about his work as micro-philanthropy consultant, and his idea to mash up the actionable opportunities on all the platforms for social change. That became Social Actions, a platform where you can find things to do: join an event, sign a petition, donate to a cause, give out a loan, volunteer.

Those things you can do come from a variety of sources, like Care2, GlobalGiving, Kiva, Idealist.org, and starting this week, also from NABUUR, the online volunteer network.

Social Actions Labs Launches Idea Wiki

Social Actions Labs is where we'll be building applications this summer that combine 19 social change and fund raising platforms like Care2, Change.org, and Kiva.org -- and present their actionable opportunities in highly useful & innovative ways.

We just started a wiki and are inviting the community to contribute their ideas for web applications and mash ups!

Imagine a Wordpress add-on that recommends actions based on the content of the post.
Imagine a Firefox Extension that alerts you to relevant social actions as you browsed the web.
Imagine a widget that lists actions that have nearly reached their goal -- only a few extra signatures or donations needed.

We want your ideas for connecting people to social actions. We'll be building 3-5 web applications this summer -- and will be choosing the community's most rock star ideas to take to the next level.

Check out the Social Actions Labs Wiki to see the 20+ ideas so far contributed by Beth Kanter, Amy Sample Ward, Tom Watson, and others.

Thanks for sharing!

- Joe Solomon, Social Actions Labs Lead Scientist and Evangelizer

N2Y3 notes

Note: My post to Social Actions' Google group, summing up the N2Y3 experience. Still buzzing from having been a part of such a fantastic event!

Introduction ~ Social Actions' Christine Egger

Hi, my name is Christine Egger and I’m with the Social Actions project. I met Social Actions’ founder Peter Deitz last year through his blog, and have been championing this project ever since. I love that it brings attention to every kind of action that individuals can take to make the world a better place, from sharing ideas and commitments to distributing funds and other resources.

NetSquared Practice

Yesterday Peter of Social Actions, a fellow NetSquared Featured Project, and MoveSmart.org practiced our pitches for the upcoming NetSquared Conference. Peter’s posted a video of his pitch, and an audio version of ours is below. According to the folks who attended last year, three themes emerged in the questions from conference attendees, who will be voting to determine who takes home what share of $100k in prize money - social impact, tech innovation, and sustainability. Our goal was to address all three in around 10-15 minutes.
