NABUUR volunteer opportunities now in Social Actions

I think I first met Peter Deitz at Web of Change, talking about his work as micro-philanthropy consultant, and his idea to mash up the actionable opportunities on all the platforms for social change. That became Social Actions, a platform where you can find things to do: join an event, sign a petition, donate to a cause, give out a loan, volunteer.

Those things you can do come from a variety of sources, like Care2, GlobalGiving, Kiva, Idealist.org, and starting this week, also from NABUUR, the online volunteer network.

It's been a little over 2 months since the NetSquared Conference (N2Y3) where the 21 NetSquared Mashup Challenge Featured Projects presented their ideas. The Conference may have ended, but their work has not.

I've created a list below of the 21 Projects' web sites, blog feeds, Twitter feeds, news feeds and Facebook groups so that you can follow their work as it progresses. (Note: Many of the proejcts also have e-newletters or mailing lists that you can join through their sites). If I've missed any feeds or sites, please let me know in the comments and I'll add them to the list.

The GreenerOne Project - our working widget

So we've created a widget for the GreenerOne site that will allow a member to display how many people they've helped make a green decision while shopping for a product.

We mashuped a few technologies to make this happen. The widget is a dynamic image (PNG) generated from a image library to display how many people you've assisted with your reviews.

Just finished volunteering. In time to hear the opening speaker. Now we get to hear a 2 minute blurb from each of the featured non profits. The first one was about "micro" volunteering. Definitely want to check that one out.

May 16: Deadline to register for the 2008 NetSquared Conference (N2Y3). The NetSquared Conference will take place May 27th – 28th, 2008 (just after Memorial Day) at the Cisco Systems’ Vineyard Conference Center in San Jose, California. Check out the Working Agenda and register today!

May 19: Deadline to submit your idea for how to mashup the Network for Good donation processing service with other services to make it easier for nonprofits to raise money online.

Getting in the mood for the NetSquared Mashup Challenge with Oneworld Connect

In my third year coming to NetSquared, I find myself in a new role: as one of 21 designated "project leads" who will be trying to connect the featured projects with the developers ready to work on an NGO project.

I'm working with Roshani Kothari and Michael Litz of the Oneworld Connect project, and together we've started a wiki page with what we'd like to work on. I'm posting the story here too: please help us develop this further, shape our thoughts, and connect our ambitions to the endless possibilities :-)

Yahoo! Green Award

Last year, NetSquared Featured Project, FamilyFarmed.org received the Yahoo! Green Award for its potential to use Web 2.0 tools to benefit the environment by connecting everyday consumers with their local farmers.

This year, Yahoo! is looking for innovative “green mashups” that will inspire people to use social technology to help the environment.

Yahoo! will review the project submissions included in the “Environment” Cause Area of the NetSquared Project Gallery. Using Yahoo! APIs is a plus, but not necessary. The most innovative green mashup will receive a $5,000 Yahoo! Search Marketing award.
