THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM IN THE DESKTOP IMAGES ABOVE WAS NOT KNOWN
Coming from a purely agrarian household in Cameroon, I was always shocked by the amount of efforts we put into the farming business, and at the end had very little financial dividends. My grand parents would take their produce, perishable most of the time to the market, hoping that some consumers will buy them. Sometimes this blind quest paid off and they returned home with some money, but most of the time they had to abandon their products in the market because no one even asked to see their products. They will return home dejected. They never gave up as the next market week saw them carrying their wares to the same market.
THE IMMEDIATE IMPACTS OF THE PROBLEM
I always felt bad in the face of these mishaps, because it meant that when schools resumed, they wont have enough money to buy my basic needs. Unknown to me then, the scale of the problem extended beyond our little hut. It affected the whole community. The dumping of food in the South West Region didnt solve the worsening food crises and and starvation in the Northern Region of Cameroon. Price hikes in the North meant food, a basic necessity could only be afforded by the very rich. The poor went hungry in the North while sheep and goats and pigs fed fat on the excesses abandoned by our parents in the market. The situation would degenerate into chaos and children forced to drop out of school because peasant farmers who depended on agriculture for income could not sell their products to send them to school.
THE BREAK THROUGH TOWARDS A SOLUTION
As I grew up I never abandoned the idea of finding a solution for folks who labour so much yet get very little for their efforts. Then my studies in electronic government opened up my mind, to the possibility of using Information and communication Technologies at the service of the rural masses. This struck a chord in me and I determined since then to pursue this objective and reduce the effects of information dirge on future generations. I carried out a field studies in Cameroon on the potential of SMS to educate farmers, link them to ready buyers and reduce the waste and poverty which the lack of information had subjected them to.
My field studies were a success, and since 2008 I have been concentrating my efforts in providing information services to farmers throughout Cameroon.Once in a while my project suffers financial setbacks, and I would appeal to funding bodies for the means that would enable my project to continually buy SMS and render educative information and marketing services to these farmers. It is from funding that we can pay honoraries to domain experts who are always ready to give advice about s.
In the course of my search for funding, I applied for an Echoing Green Fellowship, hoping to get seed funding to the tune of over 90,000 USD , but I could only make it to the semi-finals. Previously I had made it to the finals of the N2Y4 awards but because my visa application was turned down, I couldnt make it to San Jose , California to present my ideas persoanally.
My strong desire to pursue a course which I know is both noble and just keeps me hoping that someday, the 18 Million Cameroon population, of which 70 percent are farmers would touch the hearts of funders who shall support my initiative.
HOW IS AMIS-CAMEROON STRUCTURED TO HANDLE SUCH A COMPLEX PROBLEM?
THE TEAM
AMIS-CAMEROON is run by a group of dedicated professionals. All of us have a keen understanding of the problems farmers and consumers encounter in their bid to locate markets and exchange commodities for mutual benefits. First we have identified the common problems along the production and supply chain .At surface level, one might be moved to see the farmer as the sole victim in this broken production and supply chain. But a closer look reveals something deeper: consumers, farmers, siblings of consumers and farmers, investors, Traders, Sponsors, Transporters as well as the very soil on which the farming is carried out all take a hit whenever there is a glitch in this chain.
HOW WE OPERATE
Our Team is very conscious of the dangers of running a very complex set up. By spinning off several services that make up AMIS-CAMEROON and selling them off to investors, we are able to disambiguate the complexities within AMIS. The disambiguation is taken care of by the AMIS BUSINESS CREATION & DEVELOPMENT (ABC&D) unit.
The AMIS BUSINESS CREATION & DEVELOPMENT unit is the brain trust of AMIS-CAMEROON. What we do at ABC&D is that we break up a complex operation into smaller modules. Then each module works independently towards meeting the goals of AMIS-CAMEROON. At present the different business processes that make up AMIS-CAMEROON include the following modules: AMIS Cash Vendors, AMIS Logistics, AMIS Agro-Consults, AMIS-Text Messaging, AMIS-Info-Kiosks, AMIS-Database Management, AMIS-Warehouses, AMIS-Cooperatives, AMIS-Content Providers.
AMIS-CAMEROON CREATES EMPLOYMENT POSSIBILITIES
Each of these Modules is large enough to be its own employer, and we are soon organizing a fair to sensitize the General Public , and also invite sponsors and investors to buy off these spin offs from us and manage them independently under the canopy of the AMIS-CAMEROON brand. The prospect of job creation by each of the 9 modules identified is a significant development for which we are already working towards a partnership with the Cameroon National Employment Fund.
HOW A MODULE OPERATES
An idea into how the modules function is explained here using the AMIS CASH VENDORS. This is a spin-off of the main AMIS network which we sold out to an entrepreneur. The entrepreneur is responsible for setting up Cash Points in villages and managing them to cater for the banking needs of farmers. This means that there can be as many cash vendors as possible all spread over the entire country .Our design pattern and business logic simplifies the number of operations carried out by individual service units and allows for scalability in operations.
OUR DOMAIN EXPERTS WORK IN COLLABORATION WITH INVESTORS, FARMERS AND AGRIC STAKEHOLDERS
We at AMIS-CAMEROON maintain general oversight. Our domain experts work hard to ensure that individual modules throughout the service chain, from harvesting, to the logistics and the cash flows are well monitored to ensure client and user satisfaction at all levels.

Hello Harry,
This is getting more and more interesting. It's amazing how the communication between you and another partcipant 'Tobias" helps to bring the best you didnt say about AMIS-CAMEROON on your project pages.
AMIS-CAMEROON from your description and breakdown of its component parts is nothing short of a big venture and potential employer...
I give you my vote and hope you win,

Hi Zigo, thanks for the comments.
yes we are doing what we can at AMIS-CAMEROON to meet up with new challenges. Your observation is just right..Tobias is like a mentor in the pack, and I think we should be grateful to have him as a competitor in this Challenge. I am confident his contributions have reshaped the thinking of many people on this forum...that the reason for participating is not only to win, but to enable "loosers" win through the positive feedbacks he continually provides.
Thanks for your vote.

Hi Tobias, The points you
Hi Tobias,
The points you mentioned here have to do with : project details, technology used, partners, innovativeness and replicability of the AMIS-CAMEROON model in other countries, documentation of procedures and how success is measured.
I understand just how important details are in a competition whose judges know very little about the project .But I wont rewrite all over again my 2008 thesis that resulted in the creation of AMIS-CAMEROON. I shall be as concise as possible because I realise that the exchange between us gives me the opportunity to shed light on aspects which no doubt escaped my attention. Today I shall brief you on how we Operate. I hope you dont find this cumbersome
How we operate:
AMIS-CAMEROON is run by a group of dedicated professionals. But a closer look reveals something deeper: consumers, farmers, siblings of consumers and farmers, investors, Traders, Sponsors, Transporters as well as the very soil on which the farming is carried out all take a hit whenever there is a glitch in this chain.
In order to handle these problems , the AMIS BUSINESS CREATION & DEVELOPMENT unit identified different Services that shall work independently to tackle the different problems. Each unit is large enough to be its own employer, and we are soon organizing a fair to invite sponsors and investors to buy off these spin offs from us and manage them independently under the canopy of the AMIS brand. Some of the AMIS spin offs which we are soon to put on sale to investors include AMIS Cash Vendors, AMIS Logistics, AMIS Agro-Consults, AMIS-Text Messaging, AMIS-Info-Kiosks, AMIS-Database Management, AMIS-Warehouses, AMIS-Cooperatives, AMIS-Content Providers
I shall get back to you tomorrow with the technology we use.

On a serious note, I think you need not only the money, but also the trust which I hear people at the base voicing out about your activities. Your presentation of the farmers problem and the consumers difficulties are all too real to be ignored.
I wish I had all the votes to give you, but trust in your self and continue being the winner you have always been, For the Sake of the farmers.

Of course we shall need at least a writer for our web pages and to document our activities throughout the year. I understand the importance of archiving and hope you keep in touch with us even if we do not win in this Challenge..Your manner of reporting our activities in the forums you belong shall create a dent and make us known to other audiences which we might probably be ignoring..
Thanks for keeping in touch.

I heard about AMIS your activities from the small time cocoa farmers in mamfe. That was 2 years ago. when I look at the improvement in the handling of crops we businessmen buy from these farmers, I begin to see the impact of your activities. The happiness on the faces of the farmers and their willingness to help each other out with information is something that I find encouraging and worthy of praise.
When you finally set up your cash points in my area, I shall like to be one of your accredited cash vendors...I like the work your team is doing, that is why I reacted to the information passed on through our business society that we should vote for you.
Keep it up, dont be like the rest who think only of themselves.

Do you foresee involving consumers from Calabar, Nigeria into your list of priority clients? We enjoy Cameroonian food, it is presently very expensive when traders bring it here. It would be interesting to hear how you shall exploit the very large market in Calabar as well.
hope you get the prize.

Hello Jackson,
I thanks for this contribution from Nigeria. There are no boundaries to the movement of farmers' produce so long as this brings about alleviation of hunger and putting money into farmers' pockets. We want to stretch the markets for our farmers' produce as much as possible, and getting businessmen from Calabar to buy from our warehouses is something to be encouraged.
We hope that through our intervention, you shall get your cherished Cameroonian foods at the best prices.
Cast your precious vote for AMIS-CAMEROON and you shall have done your part in taking this one step further.

Hi Mr Tambe,
I can see that your different challenges have improved your innovation for social change ideas.
I am impressed about the new things you are working on, and I had to call my village to make sure your services were present there. I was sure to hear NO! But my surprise was immense when they chanted me some of your popular slogans.
The Video was a bright idea...it said it all
I love the Cash Vendors thing , and I am sure your team shall continue coming with more solutions.

Thanks to comments from
Thanks to comments from people like you, we have taken the challenge to continuously carry out research for better solutions.
In a society where farmers have been completely abandoned by the Government agencies, it becomes increasingly impossible for them to even get a loan from the regular Banks. We hope that with time, our Cash Vendors shall be able to play that role in a minimal but decisive manner to help small farmers with loans to buy seeds, especially when these same farmers happen to be the same clients who use the Cash Points to collect money for produce old.
The mutual confidence hence established shall work to the favour of both parties and lend life to the sustainability model we are introducing.
Thanks for your comments and your vote in advance.
Warmest regards,
Harry, CEO-AMIS-CAMEROON
This is an interesting
This is an interesting project idea - thanks for sharing. Your video was inspiring!
I have added your project to my favorites on Netsquared. Can you also support Kabissa's project and give your feedback? We are a network connecting people and organizations for Africa - you are very welcome to also join Kabissa, an online platform where people and organizations working in Africa can showcase themselves and connect with each other for peer learning and information sharing.
The way you describe it, your project is very large and costly. It may be easier to find support if you break it into pieces and write proposals for each of them separately.
Your sustainability model looks really interesting - I'd be really interested in learning more about it and in particular some case studies of how it works up and down the supply chain, the number of people you are serving and so on.
On the other hand, I think you need to come up with a sustainable way to cover your SMS costs - you can't expect to find funds for that from "funding bodies". Unless perhaps you can make a case for it in terms of a development project, perhaps to USAID or an organization like that. But for that you'd need to provide more detail about how it works and what the benefits are.
Keep up the good work!
Warm regards,
Tobias

Hi Tambe,
Thanks for the answers to my questions. It looks like you're doing great work and I look forward to learning more about it.
I think your project idea on Netsquared would be strengthened with more details about how exactly you operate, what technology you use, and who your partners are. I think the judges are also looking for innovations as well that can be replicated in other countries. How are you documenting your procedures and measuring your success?
Warm regards,
Tobias
Hi Tobias, I hope you got our
Hi Tobias,
I hope you got our feedback about how we operate.
On replicability, this is a concept we leave open to the receiving communities. We understand that circumstances differ so much and it is not really possible to take pre-packaged solutions from Cameroon and expect them to work for Nigeria for example.
What we provide are general outlines of how we work, and we hope that hosts communities shall always find patterns in our concept that can be adjusted to fit their situation. We dont have a One-Size-Fits-All prescription to make.
But our technology, using sms and internet to educate farmers, consumers is surely something that can be copied and adapted anywhere in the globe.
Our Innovation?? That is what makes us what we are. In our previous posting , we described the modular concept we applied to AMIS' structuring and operation. The Business logique within each module is not something we can discuss on this forum. We can only provide the skeletal frame of our operatives and crave the indulgence of the judges to excuse us for not divulging the elaborate plan here.
By the way, I want to say I enjoyed reading your posting in response to Amy Sample. You really proved in ink and spirit to be the offspring of your father and stick to your own guns..Transparency as something that should not be clouded for no reason.
Keep the good work Tobias, and I know I shall give you a call one of these days.
Best,
harry
