FAMM

Supporting organization:
Families Against Mandatory Minimums
URL:
www.famm.org
Location:
Washington, D.C.
Project Description:

Founded in 1991, FAMM  works to overturn mandatory sentencing laws that impose inflexible and excessive penalties and remove a judge's discretion in making the sentence fit the crime. FAMM supports legislation that gives the judge the ability to set a sentence based on the facts of the case and the seriousness of the offense. To support the organization's outreach and public education goals, the FAMM website has two stated purposes - to educate people about unjust mandatory sentences and to mobilize a powerful sentencing reform movement. This one of the few sites I've seen that lays out not just the purpose of the organization, but of the website itself - a level of clarity that can only help focus development efforts.

The site makes use of some innovative design to help communicate their message. On every page a randomly served image appears in the right sidebar. When the mouse passes over the image, it changes to text introducing the reader to one specific case illustrating unjust sentencing; a "Read More"  link leads to a full profile about the case. This way many cases can be profiled on the website's most read pages using very little real estate.

Interactive technology is used in several ways on the famm.org website. An online advocacy package, Cap-Wiz, serves as Content Management System where FAMM staff can create pages about each of their campaigns, as well as Action Alerts urging specific actions on a wide range of specific issues. Capwiz also provides tools that allow a visitor to the site to find their state or federal elected officials and send them a message directly from the page. The site also allows visitors to sign up for the organization's mailing list and make a donation. Future plans include obtaining a Content Management System for the parts of the site not managed through Capwiz, and building a link to transfer people joining online directly to their in-house membership database.
