UPDATE: Social Actions was pleased to announce the three top prize winners for their Change the Web Challenge at NTEN's Nonprofit Technology Conference in San Francisco on April 28th!

Watch the announcement video here!

After a NetSquared community vote narrowed the list to 24 Finalists, a team of eight expert judges selected the three winning web applications based on innovation, usability, and potential for impact.

Congratulations to the winners, the 24 Finalists, and to all the Projects that participated!  Social Actions is very excited to support all of the Projects moving forward!

Participants are also invited to keep the sparks flying by joining Social Actions' Developers Google Group!

Social Actions is Proud to Announce the Change the Web Challenge!

Social Actions' Change the Web Challenge is about building innovative tools to help people find and share opportunities to take action on the Web sites, blogs, and social networks that we all visit everyday.

Social Actions (a N2Y3 winner) has created an open database of 60,000+ actions from 50+ sites - including GlobalGiving, Change.org, DonorsChoose.org, Kiva.org, Nabuur, TakingITGlobal, Idealist.org, and VolunteerMatch. Now we want to get these actions out there - onto the Web sites, blogs and social networks that millions of people visit everyday. Next time inspiration strikes you, the opportunities to take action will be but one click away.

For a better sense of what we mean, let's take a look at a few of the Web apps already powered by Social Actions:

  • 'Related Ways to Take Action' WordPress Plugin: A plugin you can add to any WordPress.org blog that identifies the keywords of each blog posts and then displays related ways to take action.
  • Twitter Action Pack: A directory of 30+ Twitter accounts that automatically post actions on the issues you care about.
  • Firefox Ubiquity Command: A Firefox mashup that lets you highlight any phrase as your browse the web and find related ways to take action.

We want you to dream up a new tool to help people find and share actions. Any Web enabled device can become a place to connect with actions: your iPhone, news sites and blogs, Facebook & other social networks, or even in your own Web site! We're excited to see what you come up with!

Did we mention that there's also $10,000+ in prizes!

How it Works

Social Actions is facilitating this challenge to encourage innovations for distributing opportunities to make a difference across the Internet and mobile devices. Through a NetSquared Community vote, 20 finalists will be chosen. A panel of judges, selected by Social Actions will choose three winners from among the 20 finalists, to be announced at NTEN's Nonprofit Technology Conference, April 28, 2009. Winners will receive cash awards of $5,000 (first place), $3,000 (second place), and $2,000 (third place).

Individuals and organizations are invited to share their projects with the community through the NetSquared submission form. To be eligible for prizes, all submissions must 1) be fully functional by the time voting begins, 2) include an open-source license, and 3) make use of Social Actions API.
