Green Map Project Lead

Thomas TurnbullAs there seem to be so many projects at N2Y3 that involve a mapping component, I though I would introduce myself and make some connections.

My mind is rather blown with some of the latest developments in online mapping, having just returned from Where 2.0 in San Francisco.

My background is in Drupal development, and I've done a lot with the Google Map module. You can see some of the stuff at the beta of Green Map's project for N2Y3 - the Open Green Map. If anyone has questions about how to do this, I'd love to get a mapping session going in the hack room at N2Y3.

However, after meeting Mikel and Andrew at Where 2.0, I have got really excited about Mapstraction. Mapstraction is a way to add a map to a website that is not dependant on any one mapping API. You write the code once and then can switch between any of the major providers (e.g Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Open Street Map).

For the Open Green Map this is really useful as we work with communities all over the world, and in some places different maps have better coverage.

I've made some connections with other Drupal developers and we're working towards releasing a module to support Mapstraction. If you're interested in helping out, or even if you just want to say you'd like to use it, let us know at http://drupal.org/project/mapstraction.

So what other platforms are people using for their mapping mashups? Erik of Usahidi was another N2Y3 participant at Where 2.0, but we were so wrapped up in learning about each others projects that we never got onto discussing the techie side of our work!
