Involver: How Nonprofits Can Create Video Campaigns for Social Networks.
We did our Idealist.org startup meeting on Sunday. People asked me how I thought it went, and I couldn’t really tell, since I was bouncing around so much. But going by the feedback that’s trickling in, I guess it went okay. And now for the hard part: how do we keep this new community going?
I’ve been scrambling to find the one tool that we can all use - the one place where we can all go – to deepen ties and grow. So many tools, so little time. There are so many tools, that we have none. I love Wikia, which is great for collaborating on documents, but not much else. I’ve used Yahoo & Google groups, and I guess they’re okay. Which one is better, and is there something that we should use instead? I’ve used LinkedIn, and think it’s better than MySpace for telling people about ourselves, and for connecting people we know to people we know. We’re using Idealist.org and Meetup.com for events management. Is there something out there that does all this?
This multiplicity is not a huge problem for me, since I have multiple personalities. But I know that it’s a problem for normal people. Who can help them?

Thank you for this post!
I think you need to think about exactly what type of collaboration you will be doing together and match the tool to the activity or process. Then decide if you need to have a tool that links it all together. Also decide what everyone's comfort level is.
Listservs are great for getting started with a community of practice or small group that is working together. I like using them in tandem with a wiki like google docs so you can summarize from the listserv. For example, if you are using the listserv to generate an action plan or do collaborative research - the listserv/wiki combo can be great. It does take one or two people serve as the a wiki facilitator - the person who add things to the wiki or reminds people to do that. Andy Roberts has a great piece on wiki facilitation

Funny you should say that
Thanks Beth! We set up a listserve/forum and a wiki. And funny you should lead me to that article on wiki facilitation. I just proposed a wiki/site project here. All the best; Leo
