Join the Net2ThinkTank: How Can Nonprofits Use Online Video to Raise Money?

In July 2007, a Pew Internet and American Life study report found, "57% of internet users have watched videos online and most of them share what they find with others."

In April 2008, ComScore reported that, "71 percent of the total U.S. Internet audience viewed online video," that month.

With online video viewing seemingly on the rise, this month's Net2ThinkTank question is,

"How Can Nonprofits Use Online Video to Raise Money?"

Anything that tells the story and the character of the organization helps fundraising. One trick is not to "over produce" the video, especially for venues like YouTube. Brief, slices-of-life that encapsulate the story or the action of the organization are good. Don't make them too slick. Some PSAs or ads professionally made probably shouldn't be posted on the Net. Also, it's not much use without follow-up of nibbles by viewers.

So many ways to use video

First, off the example is wonderful b/c it shows how effective still shots can be. i think there are so many ways to use video. Part of my job is watching NGO videos, and I have seen them used effectively to:

Raise awareness about an org or an issue

Showcase new projects and ask for targeted funds

Update donors (and prospective donors) on the success of completed campaigns or milestones reached.I don't have metrics, but I think this one is quite effective, and perhaps underutilized.

Get interns to keep video blogs about their experiences - great for capturing younger donors who may not have much now, but certainly do participate as donors and volunteers, and are great for connecting vial all those 2.0 tools...

One question that I and my company are seeking to answer is how to extend the life of videos. I was surprised to see how many nonprofits have video they don't use, or are featured in documentaries that they do not have rights to.

Great question- look forward to hear more answers.

Examples of effective nonprofit fundraising videos

Thanks for your ideas about ways that nonprofits can use video, Chemaha.

Do you have any specific examples of videos that have been effectively used for fundraising that you can share?

By telling compelling

By telling compelling stories like the one in the video, youtube now has donate buttons, i suspect other video services will soon!

Non-profit use of video

I work for a public access media center in Gilroy, CA and like many PEG (public, educational and government) cable channels, we create FREE public service announcements for non-profits in our community.

They can then post these to their web sites and in social networking profiles for their agencies.

We also create 5-10 minute mini-documentaries for them to communicate a compelling message about their organization to potential funders, clients, volunteers and future board members.

We've just started offering online files of these productions to them as well, to post on their web site, on YouTube, on Facebook, or to submit to their local media outlets for air time or online embeds as video news releases (VNRs).

We're launching a set of workshops for non-profits on "How to use community media and social networking to promote your nonprofit organization," which other cities could contact their public access media center or community TV station to request!
