CO2Stats
CO2Stats is making the Internet environmentally friendly. It has been calculated that the electricity consumption of the computers powering the Internet is responsible for throwing more than 1 billion pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere. Our tool monitors the environmental footprint of blogs and websites and purchases renewable energy certificates to offset those emissions. We are integrating our software with Yahoo!'s YSlow API to profile the energy usage of websites, in order to identify additional means for minimizing the existing footprint. Launched by Tim Sullivan and myself in 2007, CO2Stats has already been adopted by more than 2,000 websites and makes greener the Internet surfing of millions of users per month. A virally popular mashup, it has been featured in Mashable, Scientific American, Earth2Tech, O'Reilly Radar, Xconomy, and the San Jose Mercury News.
Our project makes it easy to have a positive environmental impact. All users have to do is copy a short string of code onto their blog or website, and our software will immediately begin monitoring its traffic and calculate live its greenhouse gas footprint.
After receiving my Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard, I was named a 2008 Environmental Fellow at the Harvard Center for the Environment for my work in developing a broad portfolio of software that measures the environmental footprint of various technologies.
For our project goal to reach fruition, we want to work with any interested websites to make the Internet greener.
